This is great news, since the city of Martin itself provides no recycling services. Although recycling will require a little more effort on your part--sorting, saving, and then hauling your trash to the recycling center--we greatly encourage you to take advantage of the university's recycling program and to do your part to show some love to Mother Earth.
The UTM recycling center accepts the following donations:
- Paper and cardboard,
- aluminum cans,
- glass bottles,
- steel cans and other scrap metal,
- eye glasses,
- used clothing in good shape,
- cell phones,
- rechargeable batteries,
- ink cartridges,
- and any electronic appliances except televisions.
Since the university introduced recycling to Martin all those years ago, more and more community members and business owners have begun doing their part to recycle their waste. UT Martin's successful recycling program has actually become one of its calling cards. In 2011, the college won the prestigious Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award for Excellence in Green Schools Higher Education. And among other annual events, UTM competes in a national recycling tournament called RecycleMania, which is held each spring to pit colleges against each other to see which can recycle the most. UTM is in the final weeks of the 2014 competition now.
The Recycle Barn is located on campus at 105 N. Moody near the Agricultural Pavilion. Everyone at University Town, on campus, and in the Martin community is encouraged to use the facility free of charge.
